London Fashion Week

With London Fashion Week in full swing, its Trend time! Heres what we could deduct from the catwalks of the capital:

Back In.... But when was it ever out...?
The jacket has made a comeback! But doesnt it make you wonder, if a comeback is really a come- back when its always been a classic? In my opinion its just... Ok lets drop it right here. Jackets are back in style ladies and gents, now lets celebrate! Heck...this is like saying the little black dress is in again...when was it ever out ?

Tight...uuuh...skinny jeans
The skinny jean has become popular again...Though it isnt a trend that suits everybody, and isnt the most flattering in my opinion. For pants that ballance out proportions, try pants with a flair instead.

Man Bags. Yes, You read correctly, now read on:
In my opinion this is a disturbing trend. Okay, I know ive written an article about open mindedness, but this just pushes the envellope, and rips it to pieces. Purses are a beautiful thing; by all means, dont give them to men.

The Pencil [skirt]
Another classic back for another round of fashion roulette! The pencil skirt can be a flattering trend. For summer 06: the eraser skirt, and the stapple sweater... get it...stapple...haha...ok no.

Enough boring jokes! Come back soon for more updates from youre one and only, missteenfashionista!

Pink Polos and Cookie Cutter Clones

Very short story; Making my transition from a tomboy to a fashionista was painful. I dont know how it happened, but heres where it started:

I was in grade eight, and I had just bought a pink polo shirt. I was so proud, I owned a brand name shirt! (It was Jacob). As I walked into school, I felt my heart sink deeper and deeper. The moment I walked in I spoted two girls wearing the same shirt. How did they have MY shirt? I felt so cookie cutter; like a clone. I was identical to everyone else. I then made a concious decision to stand out (fashion wise) and take a step into the unknown. I started reading fashion magazines. And I learned alot. I then devellopped it from there.

A lesson to be learned is to always have an open mind. Look at your entourage at school. Some kids wear the most seemingly rediculous things, but still make them work, and still manage to be the most popular. Why is that? Because they have an accessory others dont; Confidence.

If you hold your head high, and never question your style, your peers wont either. Same applies for making important decisions. Dont look back on decisions you make, they all have reasons. Dont question youreself and others wont either.

You can wear couture from head to toe and it will be noticed, but if you wear it with confidence you will be instantly glamourous.

Follow your heart and youll never commit a fashion faux-pas.
Raise your glass to the new IT accessory for spring 06; Confidence!

Words of Wisdom

Here are some quotes (about fashion). Some were written by renowned designers, others by youre average everyday person. Either way they are inspiring and profound. Enjoy.

Fashion is an imposition, a reign on freedom.

The 6 essential footwear

I didnt think it was possible either. And truth be told, im a hypocrite. I own over 20 pairs of shoes. But the point of this article is to let you know witch ones you absolutly need...and why. (because everything has a reason...or maybe not...)

1) The running shoe: Plainly put, everyone should own a pair, because everybody should exercise. Even skinny people. If a skinny person takes a cardiac infarctus (cardiac arrest) Its worst for them than for heavyer-set people. So get off your bony but and exercise! NOW!
*Get a shoe that has good stability and support. A great place to buy running shoes is running room, They have qualified staff that can analyse your pronation (the way your foot strikes). And yes, this is very important, it prevents injuries.

2) The casual flat: Its good for multiple reasons. One being its casual, 2 being its flat. You can wear this to the beach, the market, the mall, school, and if theyre embellished, even a semi formal dance.

3) The black stilletto: Every woman should own a pair. No justification needed. Just like one plus one equals two, not three.

4) The sexy wedge : You know there are things you wear and they just feel down right sexy? Well theres something about [Mary? ] wedges that just has that apeal.

5) The flip flop: Because theyre cheap, colorfull, but also come in an indefinate variety of styles and colors; asian, bold colors, with a heel...

6) The boot: Because if youre a canadian chick like me, youll want to keep your toes nice and toasty, now wont you ?

And on a quick note; it has been quoted that *uggs are soooo last year!*
rebelling against this will make a fashion statement... think about it.

Case Study: The Prep

Okay so youre a member of the country club, you alternate between golf, tennis and horseback ridding, and you own a pricey car. But can you dress like a classic prep?

Okay so were not all in that context. Small secret...: Neither am I. But dressing preppy is fun. So heres what youll need to know to knock the socks off of that cute tennis player... [Andy Roddick, Tommy Haas, anyone?]

The rules of the prep:
Stay clean. That means stick to pattern-less clothing. Unless its a) argyle, b) vertical stripes or c) plaid.
Skirts should not be over 2 inches above the knee. We want preppy, not preppy gone trashy
Dont know what to buy? Think argyle sweater, white burmuda shorts, Burberry things (Its all preppy...), pearls, and lots of them.
Jewelry is simple. Diamonds, pearls. enough said.
blouses are also a must have
Stick to pastels: white, yellow, pink, lime... avoid black, red...
Look into designers such as: Raulph Lauren, Tommy Hilfiger, American Eagle
*American Eagle is more of a Casual Prep style

Later preppies!

White is the new Black

Thats right. The classic black is now...White? Black has always been a garderobe must-have, a staple in every womans wardrobe (little black dress anyone?). White is going to be the biggest trend of spring 06, and were talking big. People will watch news reports that feature Canada and think that there is still snow in the summer because there will be so much white. Okay maybe not.

First we must get down to the instincts ; why do we love black so much ? We love black because its safe, slimming, and it rejects judgement (Ever notice how Angelina Jolie often wears head to toe black? You cant go wrong, and its her way of protecting herself from fashion critics). But with the mod style comming back, black is paired with white, and someone somewhere was inspired and thus decided to explore the alternate extreme. White.

After the fall 2005 trend inspired by the Edwardian era, (Short story: When King Edward died, his wife, the Queen, went into mourning. She wore black. Turquoise black, purple black, heck, she probably wore white-black. But the point is, everything was dark. And as the public usually follows their fashion and political icons, all of England went into morning along with the Queen. So what do you think would have been on a runway back then? Something tells me it would be black.

Nevertheless, it is time to rebel against the staple color and go towards a brighter extreme; white.

So you say that white is the opposite of black, therefore it will create the opposite effect, making you look fat? WRONG. When worn monochromatically, (head to toe), white can be slimming. And remember, fashion is archetechture; it is a matter of proportions.

However dont despair if you like black and other dark colors; the runways this spring might be dominated by white, but they will be accessorized with black, navy , silver and gold. And you will be comforted to know that the mod trend is comming back, which means one thing; alot of black AND white.

Still not convinced? If white isnt your thing, rejoice in the fact that the white derivatives along the natural spectrum like ivory, oatmeal, nudes and khaki are also major colors this season- And yes, black is still there too.

We the french say, Bonjour!

Et Bienvenue! Ok enough with the frenchness! My name is Cate and this is my blog (which by now is sort of a sous-entendre right?) But nevertheless, I am here to give fashion advice, and practice my writting, for I aspire to become a fashion writter. So to kick off the grand openning of my blog, i will start with ... *dandandan* An editors note!

As a young girl, Or should I say, child, because I was anything BUT girly. Fashion wasnt part of my everyday life. As a matter of fact, it wasnt part of my life at all. Sports were the main focus of my childhood, and thats where my passion was. I, the fashionista, was once a ... ish i dont know if i should say it...okay here we go...Tomboy.

My hair was about two inches long, my nails dirty from digging through dirt in the relentless search for worms, and my running shoes dirty from my grand adventures. I did not read fashion magazines back then, and I certainly didnt pay attention to who was wearing what or how to look attractive. After all, why would an 11 year old need to look sexy ? (Okay so the designers of LaSenza Girl might argue but theres another issue the fashion industry must adress...) My point is that I looked like a little boy. From behind you would never have guessed I were a girl. The typical ready to wear outfit for me was pants, a soccer T-shirt, or a plain white sports shirt. The kind you buy at a sports competition for 20$ and reads: -World Championships 1998-.

Although I didnt pay much attention to fashion then, I sure realise the fashion crimes ive commited in the past. As a sporty girl i decided to cut my hair short(what was I thinking?!) Heres a rule of thumb; Tomboy+ Short hair+ pre-pubescent body = not much short of looking like a boy. I promiced myself I would buy my (someday) daughter dresses and alot of pink.

Sometimes I look at little girls today and wish I could have been like THAT. Like THAT? , you may ask, yes, like THAT. Like that pink skirt with the white camisole adorned by a beautiful little bow. Like the skirts, the pink, and all things said to be girly. Like the beautiful long virgin locks (I mean virgin as in, *has never been died before*. Now lets keep this blog G rated!)

But today I look back and i wouldnt have had it any other way. I would never trade the national and world ranked medals Ive won in karate for anything pink. And as for the short hair goes, sometimes I see shows on TV that feature beautiful young african girls who have barely any hair, but theyre smiles make even the top couture models look dull.

I also look to people in my life who have suffered from cancer, and who have lost their hair. The fact that they did not have hair didnt change the amount of love I had for them. That is where you realise that true beauty is not in the Chanel lipstick you are wearing, or perfect skin, or long hair, but rather in the persona you are dealing with. Beauty doesnt lie in how long your hair is, or how trendy you are, but it is in your smile, and in your soul. If ever you were stripped of everything you had (yes, clothes too) the beautiful things you would have left would be your smile, soul, and story.

And thus I conclude that who I was then is a different person than who I am now. Nothing ever stays the same, and thats the beauty of life. I have evolved from a child to a young woman. I now have different preoccupations than I did when I was twelve. Life changes, and you adjust. Fashion evolves just like we do. That is the wonder of life, that is what makes it so beautiful, so captivinting, so unique.
